The new and improved method
So, like every Odyssey of the Mind team anywhere, we decided to try a new method of building the costumes this year. And it was much more successful!
We started with "borrowing" the wheelchair from each family and taking it to our superhero lair to fit the pipes around the chair. This allowed us to study each chair's unique design and to match it with the costume each child wanted. Once the pipes were fitted, we took several photos and then made a short video describing the way the frame fit on the wheelchair, along with any pertinent measurements. Since we weren't creating the cardboard part until weeks after the pipe part, this video really helped when we started building. Generally, it took about an hour to get the pipes framed. We got faster with practice! |
Attaching the frameWe also changed the way we attached the pipes to the frames to make it easier for families and schools to assemble the costume on Halloween.

An example of a videoHere is one video example. It's not Hollywood quality but it sure does help when you start building!
